Comfort Food

Dumpling Time at Yaudim Dim Sum & Noodle Shop

Date:

For a cozy way to warm your tummy as the colder weather inches nearer, head to the local Yaudim (Dim Sum & Noodle Shop) for an eclectic cuisine of dumplings, ramen and much more. It is the perfect comfort food as winter approaches.

With an extensive Huntingdon Valley and Philadelphia customer base, owner Eric Wong has more than 20 years of restaurant experience in traditional cuisine native to China, Japan and Hong Kong; all flavors that excite the palate.

Wong is extremely proud of his offerings, especially the soup dumplings, which are from time-honored family recipes.

Between Wong and his business partner, they operate several restaurants, including a Dim Sum Restaurant and Japanese Ramen Shop, as well as Yaudim, the newest location at 15501 Bustleton Ave., which opened with 35 seats in December 2024. Other locations include Philadelphia’s Chinatown and Princeton, New Jersey.

“Among the favorite items at Yaudim are the dim sum soup dumplings with a Ramen Broth technique,” explained Wong, who is Malaysian Chinese. “It requires a long time to understand how to make the broth for the chicken soup dumplings and the other offerings,” he said with pride.

“You have to like the food, and after that, the unique flavor is the most important thing,” when it comes to the fried dim sum, steamed dim sum and noodle rice bowls, explained Wong.

Everything about this welcoming restaurant holds a bit of an education. For example, the name reflects the cuisine – the term Yau is Chinese for excellent, and Dim Sum is the word for small Cantonese-style dumplings.

Wong, who grew up with Japanese and Cantonese Cuisine, came to the United States and immediately went into the restaurant business, showcasing the flavors and dishes of his homeland.

Among the other popular menu items are the curry ramen, classic chicken Paitan ramen (a rich and creamy chicken soup ramen) and spicy chicken ramen, kimchi, shrimp dumplings (steamed dumplings filled with juicy shrimp in a crystal wrapper), Spicy Wontons (in a flavorful chili oil), pork soup dumplings (tasty soup-filled pork dumplings) and the Crazy Sauce Cheung Fun (silky rice noodle rolls with sweet and savory sauces – known as a favorite street snack in Hong Kong).

Frequent customer Evelyn Leong frequently travels from Boston to Philadelphia, and she and her mom love Yaudim’s many offerings.

“Anytime we are in Philadelphia, we visit the restaurant.”

She has known Wong for two years.

She said that Wong’s Dim Sum is always fresh. Leong loves the deep-fried crispy bacon rolls with shrimp paste, and her mother enjoys all of the noodle dishes, as well as the variety that is offered.

“The food is quick and easy and always delicious. When my mom isn’t with me, I enjoy bringing a group of friends,” she said. “I find it cleaner and more enjoyable” than many other restaurants.

Wong says he is happy to accommodate diners who enjoy the food with a little or a lot of spice, which is why he recently added a popular new spicy item, the cold cucumber, fresh cucumber slices tossed in a light spicy dressing.

This is one of several meatless options, which also include golden and crispy spring rolls filled with vegetables, pan-fried vegetarian dumplings, vegetable ramen with egg noodles and the scallion pancake.

One item that diners enjoy for the end of the meal is the Phoenix Bun, steamed buns filled with sweet Moulton egg custard, or the Red Bean Bun, steamed buns filled with sweet red bean paste.

Popular drink items include the cold fruit bubble teas in lychee, mango, peach and passionfruit flavors, as well as sodas and bottled teas.

Wong and his 35-seat restaurant have been hosting many birthday parties, anniversary gatherings, graduation parties and other rites of passage during the past year, and he looks forward to helping local customers continue to celebrate in the future.

Wong says that he greatly appreciates the support of his many repeat customers.

“I am happy that they enjoy the food, which keeps them coming back, and I want to thank them for their loyalty.” ••
