Hello Fishtown! I am excited for you to check out our fifth edition of TheHook dedicated to the lifestyle and community of Fishtown.

We start our issue at the Kensington Kinetic Derby & Arts Festival. In its 17th year, the festival took place for the first time in the fall celebrating “the creativity and spirit of our community” with art, mud, and Awful Wrestling. “There’s nothing like this in the region,” enthused Marc Collazzo, executive director of the Fishtown-Kensington Area Business Improvement District (BID). Follow the art, mud and Awful Wrestling on page 6.

Next, we meet Kathleen Treude-Vaughan, owner of Fishtown Jewelers, and her daughter, Christine. Fishtown Jewelers has been a family owned and operated affair for close to 20 years. From reimagining beloved masterpieces and working on simple repairs, to creating something brand new or even finding the jewelry of one’s dreams, customers can count on Fishtown Jewelers to craft or carry exactly what they have in mind. Follow their story on page 10.

Midway we head to the 2025 Chili Cookoff, which has been a staple from 2010 to 2018, with a revitalization last year. The Chili Cookoff in November kicked off the local fall and winter events hosted through the Fishtown Neighbors Association (FNA). Competitors vied for the best in three categories: People’s Choice, Best Restaurant Chili, and Best Resident Chili. Have a taste on page 18.

We round our issue at your local corner bar: The Nut Hut Saloon. It’s Fishtown’s only sports bar and has been a popular spot, in sports season or not, with people frequenting the dive bar since January 2024. Along with their events calendar, their menu is packed. Enjoy on page 22.

Also check out our Entertainment & Nightlife Column for the latest scoop on page 2 and The Catch on page 28. All of this and more awaits on the pages ahead!

Enjoy!
