The Heart of Home Design

Janibell Rodriguez on Growing a Design Empire

Date:

Tucked in the heart of downtown Metuchen, Kitchens, Bath & Beyond has become a local design gem, known for transforming ordinary spaces into timeless, functional works of art.

What began as a passion for aesthetics and entrepreneurship at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) has grown into a full-service design studio serving clients across Metuchen and beyond.

We caught up with the creative force behind the studio, Janibell Rodriguez, the visionary designer and proud woman-owned business founder, to talk about her journey, signature style, and what it means to build dream spaces right here in the Brainy Borough. From kitchens and baths to full-home transformations and backyard retreats, she’s redefining how design meets real life.

What inspired your journey from studying at FIT to launching Kitchens, Bath & Beyond here in Metuchen?

FIT is amazing for anyone who’s creative and loves design—not just clothes, but spaces and lifestyle. Fashion is everywhere. While I was there, I took an entrepreneurship course and instantly knew I wanted to work on my own terms. That mix of creativity and business drive is what led me to launch Kitchens Bath & Beyond.

What are your most popular services?

My main specialty is kitchens and bathrooms—that’s where my business began and what I’m best known for. Our most popular service is full-service kitchen and bath design, from concept to final install. But we also create outdoor landscapes and offer design services for any room in the home when clients want a cohesive, whole-house look.

You’ve gone way beyond kitchens and baths—now you’re designing entire homes, outdoor spaces, even pools! What’s that growth been like? And how do you keep your signature style across such different types of spaces?

It’s been organic. Clients who loved their kitchens asked us to design living rooms, patios, and eventually pools. My team and I stay true to a timeless modern foundation—warm woods, clean lines, layered textures—so whether it’s a chef’s kitchen or a backyard oasis, there’s a consistent language of calm sophistication.

Your style is such a beautiful mix of timeless elegance and modern edge. Where does that aesthetic come from? And has it changed over the years?

My style is definitely timeless modern. I love starting with a neutral palette so we can layer in color as trends come and go, giving each space lasting appeal. While that’s our signature, I also respect the history of every property. If a project calls for the charm of a 1920s Metuchen home or another distinct period, we design to honor that architecture and keep the original era intact—we don’t force modern elements where they don’t belong. Each client and house guides the direction.

Being a women-owned business in a design and construction space is powerful (and pretty awesome!). How has that shaped the way you work, lead, or create?

Design and construction can be male-dominated, but I see that as an advantage. Clients appreciate a leader who brings empathy, organization, and a collaborative spirit while still running a tight ship. I mentor younger women entering the field, showing them that creativity and strong business skills can coexist.

Are there any design trends right now that you’re especially excited about?

I’m loving the return of natural stone with bold movement, warm neutral palettes, and integrated indoor–outdoor living. Also, statement lighting—sculptural fixtures that double as art.

What’s it like to actually work with your studio—from that first virtual consult to the final install?

We start with a virtual or in-studio consultation to understand goals and style. Then we create a custom design plan: space planning, mood boards, and 3D renderings if needed. Next comes material selection and procurement—we source everything from cabinetry to hardware. Clients can opt for full project management, where we coordinate contractors and timelines, so installation is seamless.

Your spaces look beautiful, but they also feel super livable. How do you strike that balance between style and functionality?

I design from the inside out—how people move, cook, relax, and gather—before choosing the prettiest tile or faucet. Durability, storage, and maintenance are considered alongside aesthetics so clients can live in their dream space without fear of ‘messing it up.’

Metuchen has such a strong sense of community. How has being based here influenced your business or your design perspective?

Metuchen is vibrant and family-oriented, with a mix of historic charm and fresh creativity. Being part of this community keeps me grounded and inspired. Many of our clients are neighbors, so every project feels personal—it’s about enhancing the town’s character as much as the individual home.

When you’re not designing dream spaces, where is your favorite go-to spot in Metuchen to relax and recharge, or get inspired?

I love stopping by Hatch—their space is so thoughtfully designed that it always refreshes my creativity. I also enjoy unwinding at the local Brewed Awakening, which is another neighbor of mine. Both places have a great atmosphere and remind me why I love living and working in this community.
