The Puerto Rican Civic Association of Hammonton (PRCA) has a rich history that dates to 1957.
Founded by Fernando “Freddy” Melendez along with a group of fellow Puerto Ricans, the Association was initially established to provide support to migrant farm workers arriving from Puerto Rico. Their goal was to ensure that they had access to good living conditions and fair treatment.
But what started off as a small effort to help Puerto Ricans feel welcome and supported in the United States has evolved into something much greater.
“The founders came together creating a fellowship with the idea to work together with the community at large, celebrate their members’ families’ milestones, and provide a ‘home away from home’ atmosphere,” said Lilian Pagan, secretary of the Association.
With the growth into a self-funded nonprofit organization, it became the Associations’ mission to promote Puerto Rican culture and offer assistance with health, education and support to the community.
Throughout the years, the PRCA has made a lasting impact on countless lives. Among some of its notable projects was the humanitarian response to Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico in 2017.
“Our organization mobilized and became a donation drop off center for food, non-perishable items, which were then shipped to the island,” Pagan explained.
The Association also partnered with a local church to raise funds for a Mexican community affected by an earthquake in Mexico.

PRCA’s commitment to service has developed yearly events, which include providing annual scholarships to students, hosting toy drives for children under 12 during the annual Three Kings Day celebration and organizing special events in honor of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
In addition, the PRCA has partnered with Alcoholics Anonymous to offer services for Spanish speaking residents and has facilitated vaccination clinics and educational outreach programs.
“The goal of the organization is to continue to work with other organizations in the area to promote culture and provide educational programs as well as continuing to provide assistance to local families in need,” Pagan said.
The association is always looking for new members and the requirements include being of Puerto Rican descent, must be 18 years of age and have a good standing in the community.
“Our members are all volunteers who have a passion for community service, helping others, and feel a sense of pride of culture and community,” Pagan said.
While there isn’t a monetary incentive attached to becoming a member, prospective members are encouraged to attend monthly meetings, held on the first Sunday of every month at 3 p.m. The meetings take place at the PRCA Clubhouse located at 367 Old Forks Road, Hammonton. Membership applications are available during these meetings and are subject to review and approval by the existing members.
The PRCA Clubhouse serves as a vibrant hub for various events and activities throughout the year. One of its most celebrated events is the annual Puerto Rican Festival, which takes place during the summer.
“This year marks the 66th anniversary of the festivities where we bring live music, typical Puerto Rican cuisine and other activities to the public free of charge,” Pagan said.
The 2025 festival is scheduled for Sunday, August 24; Friday, August 29; Saturday, August 30; and Sunday, August 31.
Looking ahead, the Association is eager to involve younger generations in its mission hoping to “incorporate their vision and aspirations with those of our founders,” Pagan said.
