Consumers in the market for building supplies can choose from a variety of big box stores, but many instead opt for hometown businesses that support the local economy. Here in Pitman, locally owned Peter Lumber Company provides residents a place to shop for building supplies such as lumber, doors and cabinets, while boosting the town’s economy.
“In 1932 Hugh M. Peter, Sr. founded Peter Lumber Company. His business plan was to proudly offer our customers quality materials, good service and sound advice at the right price. That is our heritage and our future. Three generations of Peter family members have worked within the company to maintain our tradition of integrity, dependability and value,” Alex Armstrong, manager of Peter Lumber Company in Pitman, stated.
Headquartered in Pleasantville, where the company originated, Peter Lumber Company has expanded in its 90 plus years in operation. The store now serves South Jersey with five locations and Pennsylvania with two locations. The Pitman location, 600 W. Holly Avenue, was acquired in the early 1980s, Armstrong said.
The formula for success at Peter Lumber Company is to offer service and professionalism, according to Armstrong. “Whether you need a lot of time to go over something or are trying to get in and out quick, we are able to meet any and all needs. You will get professional assistance from longtime industry employees compared to the ever rotating help at box stores,” he said. That personal touch doesn’t go unnoticed.
Rich Sharpnack, Jr., who along with his father, Rich Sharpnack, Sr., owns Sherwood Builders, frequents Peter Lumber Company for the needs of their construction firm.
“Unlike large retail chains such as Lowe’s and Home Depot, Peter Lumber consistently provides the necessary high quality materials and can expedite their delivery if needed, which is crucial for our business. Alex and his team are highly skilled and always available to assist us in person or over the phone with material orders or any issues that may arise on the job site. This level of support is why Peter Lumber in Pitman has become the preferred supplier for Sherwood Builders,” Sharpnack, Jr., stated. Sherwood Builders, serving South Jersey for over 50 years, purchases supplies related to kitchen and bathroom remodeling, deck construction, custom furniture and cabinetry.

In the Spring 2025, the company opened a 1,200 square foot kitchen showroom at the site of the current Pitman location. “After seeing the trends and prices being spent on kitchens in the last decade, we decided we needed to offer more for customers prior to making such a big purchase. So now we provide a space where they can envision themself at home, see hundreds of color and style combos, while also having countertop displays, tile, and accessories all in one place. “We offer multiple lines of cabinetry to fit any budget,” Armstrong said.
He added that the company partnered with Woodbury Appliance to showcase some options available, including double ovens, refrigerators and microwaves. Customers can also choose their piece of granite or quartz according to their needs. “Because kitchens are just a small piece of our puzzle, and with the almost 100 years of purchasing history, we are able to secure great pricing with vendors to pass on to our customers. We are committed to staying up to date and with the trends for the best experience,” Armstrong said.
Beyond customers, Peter Lumber Company also supports the community. “We try to give back as much as possible. We donate a lot of lumber and supplies throughout the year, ranging from nonprofits to eagles scout projects, and recently the new Edelman Fossil Park. We have helped out with random items for a few of the schools as well. We chip in financially around town for sports teams shirts, field signs, golf outings and more. I think giving back is a big part of running a business in town. It shows we care about our community, which most of us live in,” Armstrong explained.
