Hello 08071! Spring! You are here! So excited to enjoy the warmer weather, hear the birds chirping and watch the beautiful flowers bloom. I am also excited for you to check out our Spring edition magazine dedicated to the lifestyle and community of Pitman.

We start our issue with the Pitman Writers’ Guild. What began as a place for writers to enhance their skills has evolved into a key community organization. “The Pitman Writers’ Guild hopes to create better writers and stronger editors,” Jason R. James, a founding member of the Pitman Writers’ Guild (PWG), said. “We want to create a community that supports one another as we grow in our individual writing. We want our members to write consistently. Finally, we want to engage with our community to promote the art of writing.” And that’s what they have been doing since 2017. Follow the pen on paper starting on page 5.

Next, we follow the flavors of Big Papa Jai’s BBQ where they have been receiving recognition for their unique, yet iconic BBQ dishes with a street food flare since its inception. It all began when husband and wife, Jaime and Alyson Juliano, entered a BBQ competition via a radio station. Although neither of them pursued any formal culinary training and were at first only making sauces, their dishes were well-liked by the tasters. Big Papa Jai’s serves their BBQ in the form of tacos or all different types of sandwiches. Almost every menu item is designed to be compact and handheld, but still oozing with flavor. And it has only grown from there with the support from the Pitman and Glassboro area. Follow the ooze on page 9.

We round our issue with the Hitting4Habitat Baseball/Softball Tournament held for the first time in Alcyon Park. Baseball and softball players from the Pitman Little League – ages 6 to 8 – swung their bats, hit baseballs, and ran bases – all for a great collaborative environmental endeavor led by Francesca Mundrick, community outreach commissioner for the Pitman Environmental Commission (PEC). As part of the sports for nature concept, the young athletes learned about biodiversity and as part of the initiative, they have a chance to build their own native plant garden. Learn all about the ‘home run’ for biodiversity on page 11.

Also check out Planning in Pitman for future community events on page 14 and hear what your neighbors have to say, Milkshakes or Smoothies? on page 2. All of this and more awaits on the pages ahead!

Enjoy!
