Hello 07728! Who else is tired of this cold weather? Although I do love the beauty of the snow, I could do without the below freezing temperatures! I am excited for you to check out our Winter edition magazine dedicated to the lifestyle and community of Freehold.

We start our issue at Golden Bao. Inspired by his parents’ restaurant, Alex Chen opened his own Chinese restaurant in the same complex as iPlay America 13 years ago. While his parents still have their restaurant business, Chen says Golden Bao is a family business of a different kind, noting he and his wife along with his brother-in-law and his wife work at the business. The recipes come from Chen’s parents, dating back 25 years or more. Some of their customers’ favorite dishes are General Tso’s chicken, chicken with broccoli, cheese wonton, BBQ boneless ribs, and lo mein. There are also chef’s specialties of Happy Family, Four Season and Five “O”. Follow all the Chinese takeout deliciousness starting on page 8.

Next, we visit Giuliana and Audrina Demma. At just 14 and 11, respectively, they run their nonprofit G’s Giving Gowns, GGG for short, from the basement of their family’s Freehold home. Since 2021 they have made hospital gowns and more recently port access T-shirts for pediatric cancer patients. Inspiration for GGG came from their baby cousin Giada, who had been diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer eight years ago. Giuliana remembers her baby cousin in a “three times her size” hospital gown with a “depressing” drab color. When Giuliana learned to sew a few years later during a fashion camp, she realized she could customize hospital gowns for kids just like Giada who are fighting cancer. Check them out starting on page 12.

We round out our edition with the Freehold Area Running Club, which started in 1983. They hold about 25 events every year, according to its current president of the Club, Chris Gross. “I wasn’t a runner when I started,” Gross said, “I want to foster anyone else that is like that. I’ve given out a lot of awards to kids who were just like me. I want to get some people back into running.” Start to run on page 19.

Also included in our Winter edition magazine: Spring is right around the corner in Downton Freehold, page 16; Shop Downtown Freehold guide starting on page 7; Following Freehold on page 22 and hear what our neighbors have to say when asked “Do you prefer penguin or polar bear?” on page 2.

All of this and more awaits on the pages ahead!

Enjoy!
